    Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde
    12 September 2012 – 13 January 2013

Combining rebellion, beauty, scientific precision and imaginative grandeur, the Pre-Raphaelites constitute Britain’s first modern art movement. This exhibition brings together over 150 works in different media, including painting, sculpture, photography and the applied arts, revealing the Pre-Raphaelites to be advanced in their approach to every genre. Led by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) rebelled against the art establishment of the mid-nineteenth century, taking inspiration from early Renaissance painting.
The exhibition has already seen broad and hugely positive press coverage and fantastic visitor numbers. Many of our clients have shown interest in entertaining around the exhibition most typically in The Manton Foyer or Gallery 9
The exhibition shows that the Pre-Raphaelite environment was widely encompassing in its reach across the fine and decorative arts, in response to a fast-changing religious and political backdrop, and in its relationship to women practitioners

Wallace Collection

A great display of paintings by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo, a key protagonist of Spain’s Golden Age and a contemporary of Velázquez and van Dyck, will open on 6th February at the Wallace Collection.

The museum houses one of Britain’s most important collections of paintings by Murillo. This special display dedicated to the artist will reunite for the first time in over two hundred years the Wallace Collection paintings with a rarely seen loan, which together formed part of one of his important cycles.

In 1674 the merchant Giovanni Bielato bequeathed a number of paintings by Murillo to the Genoese Capuchin church. Six of these were purchased in 1805 and brought to London with three ultimately coming into the collection of the 4th Marquess of Hertford, one of the founders of the Wallace Collection. In one room of the exhibition the three paintings will be reunited with the only other painting from the series that has remained in Britain, Rest on the Flight into Egypt from Wrotham Park. Displayed once more together, viewers will appreciate something of their original emotional impact.
